The 5th edition of the Care Expo Taipei showcased the "Elderly Nutrition and Care Zone," featuring diverse products from the TAF Industry Alliance and other exhibitors, opening new avenues for the senior care market. As part of the expo, the "Asia Care Food Forum" gathered international experts and industry leaders to discuss texture-modified foods, nutritional support, and innovative care models.
Elderly Nutrition and Care Zone: Hands-on Consultation and Traditional Cuisine
The Care Expo Taipei 2024 established a dedicated Elderly Nutrition and Care Zone, offering visitors insights into various texture-modified food options. A key highlight was the "Food and Nutrition Support Consultation Station", which operated throughout the event, bringing together 12 experts, including language therapists, nutritionists, and palliative care nurses from several institutions. The expert team provided comprehensive dietary guidance, covering ingredients, eating tools, and cooking techniques to help seniors eat safely and healthily.
Additionally, the zone featured daily interactive sessions, including demonstrations of signature dishes prepared by senior community members, reviving the nostalgic flavors of home-cooked meals. Cooking workshops also guided participants in creating nutritious and senior-friendly meals, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a well-balanced diet for aging individuals.
Asia Care Food Forum 2024: A Global Perspective on Aging and Nutrition
Held on 12th September 2024 as a key event within the expo, the Asia Care Food Forum welcomed experts and industry professionals from Singapore, Thailand, and Taiwan to discuss the evolving landscape of care food in aging societies. The forum explored the latest developments in texture-modified food, cross-disciplinary caregiving strategies, and solutions to eating and swallowing challenges among the elderly.
Gentle Group: Revolutionizing Elderly Nutrition through Innovation
Representing Singapore, Yiru Shen, CEO of Gentle Group, shared insights on how their company integrates advanced food technology with clinical rehabilitation to enhance the quality of life for individuals with swallowing difficulties. Gentle Group specializes in texture-modified foods tailored to Asian tastes, offering over 300 product varieties, including bulk and bento meal formats. Their goal is to preserve traditional meals' familiar flavors and appearances while ensuring optimal nutrition.
Shen also announced the company’s expansion plans, including establishing Gentle Foods and Gentle Care services in Taiwan. This initiative aims to develop products aligned with Taiwanese culinary preferences, further improving accessibility to high-quality care food solutions.
SOFT Spoon: Pioneering Care Food in Thailand
Satisa Sombatthawee, co-founder of Dreammining Co., Ltd., introduced SOFT Spoon, Thailand’s first dedicated care food brand. As Thailand's elderly population surpasses 13.2 million, swallowing disorders are becoming an increasing concern. SOFT Spoon addresses this challenge by offering over 40 texture-modified Thai dishes that cater to nutritional needs and taste preferences, ensuring that aging individuals can continue to enjoy their meals safely and comfortably.
Sombatthawee emphasized that as awareness of dysphagia-related issues grows in Thailand, SOFT Spoon aims to bridge the gap between nutrition and convenience. Their mission is to create safe, accessible, and flavorful meal options that enrich the dining experience for seniors while promoting overall well-being.
Taiwan’s Community-Based Swallowing Care Model
Dr. Chun-Chieh Wu, Director of the Rehabilitation Department at Taipei City Hospital’s Zhongxing Branch, highlighted Taiwan’s innovative approach to community-based swallowing care. His team has developed an integrated home-visit service, allowing interdisciplinary teams—including speech therapists, dietitians, and caregivers—to provide personalized swallowing rehabilitation for seniors. This initiative has significantly improved the ability of elderly individuals to regain natural eating functions, reducing dependence on nasogastric feeding tubes.
The forum also featured support from the Taiwan Dental Technicians Association, with keynote speaker Hsiao-Hsuan Yang discussing the impact of dentures on elderly nutrition. Yang stressed that well-fitted dentures enhance not only seniors’ eating experiences but also their overall quality of life by allowing them to enjoy a wider range of nutritious meals.
Looking Ahead: Shaping the Future of Elderly Care Nutrition
The Asia Care Food Forum 2024 underscored the need for collaborative innovation in addressing aging-related nutritional challenges. By integrating food technology, medical expertise, and culturally relevant culinary solutions, industry leaders are paving the way for a more inclusive and effective care food ecosystem.
As companies like Gentle Group and SOFT Spoon expand their presence in new markets, and as Taiwan continues to develop its community-centered care approaches, the future of elderly nutrition looks promising. The insights gained from this year’s forum will undoubtedly inspire further advancements, ensuring that aging populations across Asia can enjoy safe, delicious, and nourishing meals tailored to their needs.
